Meet Our Board: Danny Earl

Dr. Danny Earl has served on the Board for three years, with three alumni and two children currently attending; Ethan, 16, and Lizzy, 14. He loves to do anything with his family, such as hunting, fishing, or watching a football game. He works in his day-to-day job as a veterinarian. Dr. Earl’s favorite part about sending his children to SACS is, “…that the school reinforces my family’s spiritual foundation. Also, there is a community-family environment of like-minded families and teachers that really love the students and the school. This positive culture has really helped our children reach their fullest potential mentally, spiritually, physically and emotionally.” The hardest part about serving on the Board is making a decision which may negatively impact a family, but be better for the rest of school. The best part, says Dr. Earl, is being able to make a positive impact on the school. His favorite Bible verse is Romans 8:35-39, which says, “Who will separate us from the love of Christ? Will tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword? Just as it is written, ‘For Your sake we are being put to death all day long;We were considered as sheep to be slaughtered.’ But in all these things we overwhelmingly conquer through Him who loved us. For I am convinced that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor things present, nor things to come, nor powers, nor height, nor depth, nor any other created thing, will be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.”

You Don't Have to Be A Victim

Slam! You’re up against the locker. Wham! You’ve been punched in the face. Bam! You’re on the ground being kicked mercilessly as demeaning words are being incessantly hurled at you. This is what most people picture when they think of bullying. However, this is not true. Bullying is the sharp words that cut you to the core with no amnesty as your dignity flows out of you.
Brooks Gibbs is a popular motivational speaker for youth on the topic of bullying, and is the author of the best-selling book, Love Is Greater Than Hate.  However, he is not part of just another anti-bullying program that talks about how bad bullying is. His message is different. He teaches on the Golden Rule of love your neighbor, as you would love yourself. Gibbs says, “The Golden Rule is the solution to end bullying because it is empowered by love.” Gibbs’s main message is to be kind to those who are mean to you because we often need a social skill for our enemies, not our friends. Gibbs also tells us why bullies do the things they do. He says, “Very few want to abuse you. They just want to provoke you.” So, by retaliating with kindness, the bullies see we cannot be provoked, and they lose the level of importance they were hoping to gain because it’s hard to be mean to a nice person.

When he was young, Gibbs was bullied. Because of this, he understands how hard it can be to retaliate with kindness and not get upset. He also knows when you retaliate with cruelty and get upset, the bully wins, and you lose. Gibbs was always losing. He got depressed. He cut himself. Despair and hurt was flowing through his veins. Until one day, his grandmother told him something that transformed him forever. She told him the bullies weren’t making him upset and angry; he was making himself upset and angry. She said nobody could hurt your feelings without permission. By hearing these words, Gibbs couldn’t lose the game of bullying. By remembering that words couldn’t hurt his feelings, couldn’t break him, and couldn’t control him, he says, “I was able to go from victim to solving my own social problem.” It was easier for him to apply the Golden Rule and be kind to those who were mean to him. This is what he strives to get through to every single person he speaks to. Gibbs tells everyone, “Bullying is an opportunity to build resilience.” He wants everyone to know you control your feelings, and nothing has to hurt unless you let it.

Gibbs’s message on the Golden Rule and power over personal  feelings is what got him noticed by some moms at San Antonio Christian Schools (SACS). The Parent Teacher Fellowship (PTF) moms of the elementary school students had seen the statistics that say, “One out of seven kids from kinder to twelfth grade are bullies or victims of bullies.” As a result, PTF moms wanted to find a bullying curriculum to teach to their children. Todd Landers, the Elementary School Director of Curriculum, says, “Bullying is actually just dealing with social interactions.” He wanted to start teaching his young students how to deal with these interactions, so they could learn to deal with tough relationships and be equipped before they have to deal with too much. While the concerned mothers were searching for the best curriculum, Gibbs continued to appear. Soon later, it was discovered that Gibb’s sister, Erica Murphy, had two daughters who attended elementary school at SACS. With this information, it was decided and arranged to have Gibbs come and speak to the children. Knowing how great a message he had, Gibbs was asked if he could speak to the Middle and High School as well. Gibbs gladly accepted.
On February 16, 2014, Gibbs shared his unique point of view on bullying at SACS. He shared his own experience. He made the students laugh. He told how their happiness couldn’t be taken away from them. Most importantly, he taught on the Golden Rule. Robert Armstrong, the High School Principal at SACS, said, “The best message he can give you guys is the concept of loving others as you would be loved.” Not only did the faculty love him, but also he was popular among the students. Kyle Lewis, a freshman, went into the assembly thinking he would just be hearing another speech on how bullying isn’t right and how we should try to stop it. However, afterwards, he said, “He spoke more of his personal life and how to cope with bullying. It was more impacting than I expected.” Also, students were surprised on how he taught to deal with bullying by not telling a teacher and just being kind. Mandy Segura, a freshman, said, “It was a radical approach to bullying.” Gibbs continues to travel around the nation, sharing his life-changing message in bullying. Logan Cheney, a senior at SACS who has met Gibbs, said, “He moves where God wants him to be.”

SACS SWIMMING AND ELEMENTARY SOCKS....MAKING A SPLASH!!

SACS Swimming took to the pool on Friday, February 14, under the leadership of 5 year Coach Stephanie Kass and made quite a splash at the TAPPS Division II State meet.

The boys team finished 4th - just 2 points short of the podium and the girls team achieved best times in every race!

John Johnson, Junior, was awarded Central Region Division II Male Swimmer of the Year. Runner up for the award was another SACS swimmer, Zach Terreri. Couldn't be more proud of them both!

Clayton Rhodes and Paulina Macias, both 4 Year letterman and Captains on the team, retired their caps and goggles as seniors competing in their last meet. The team will miss their leadership and their great contribution to our success.
Swimming will return to the pool again September 2014 and is open to new members.

SHOW US YOUR SOCKS!!

Each year SACS elementary hosts a school-wide mission project.  This year, we will be supporting the national ministry Sole Mission.  Native Texans, Kelly and Alisa Ward founded Sole Mission in 2008 to meet the needs of U.S. children living in poverty.  These children face many daily challenges with one of them being hand-me-down shoes with holes, or the shoes are too small or too big (making their feet to grow crooked and deformed), or they have no shoes at all.  Their mission is to provide new shoes to children across America.  With the need for shoes comes the need for socks!  So this year we have the privilege of partnering with Sole Mission in their efforts.  If you would like additional information on Sole Mission, their website is www.solemission.org.
We have been collecting new socks in adult and children’s sizes.  For each pair of socks brought, the student receives a paper heart, which reflects the love of Christ and compassion for others.  The hearts are then put on the exterior of their classroom door and hallway wall.  It has been fun seeing the hearts added each day and has been a great way to usher the students into Valentine’s Day!
The total number of pairs of socks collected is….5,308!!!  Way to go elementary students, parents, faculty, and staff.  Many children and adults will be blessed by your giving.
I John 4:12

…if we love one another, God lives in us and His love is made complete in us.
May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing ,so that by the power of the Holy Spirit you may abound in hope!!

Thanks to Jamey White and Donna Patton for their contributions to our blog today!!

HAVE A JOYFUL WEEKEND, ALL!!

Amazing Stats!

Meet the hard working women of SACS Guidance!  They are there to make sure every request to colleges and for scholarships is fulfilled for each graduate.
There is an amazing statistic at the bottom of the 2013-2014 school profile!  The information reads, "The 106 members of the Class of 2013 received acceptances from 64 institutions of higher learning.  One hundred percent of the graduating class matriculated to 36 colleges and universities in 10 states over the U.S."
100 %...amazing!  It takes an incredible faculty and the hard work of Guidance to oversee such success!

Have a great Wednesday everyone!

MEET OUR BOARD: COURT ALLEN

Your SACS Board Members: Mr. Court Allen
Mr. Court Allen, the Board Secretary, has served on the SACS Board for one year. His two children, Joel and Adelaide, are in 5th and 2nd grade, respectively. He loves to play outdoor sports with his children, such as baseball, tennis, golf, fishing, and hunting. Allen’s favorite thing about sending his children to SACS is, “Knowing that they are being taught how to know and serve the Lord while receiving an excellent education.” As for his day-to-day occupation, he serves as a lawyer, dealing with intellectual property law, such as patents, copyrights, and licensing.  About his job on the Board, Allen says, “The most difficult aspect is when we have to make decisions that ultimately will be for the greater good but will result in difficulty for some people.  The most enjoyable aspect is the privilege of serving with a wonderful group of godly men who love SACS and desire to see God's kingdom advanced through Christian education.” His favorite Bible verse is Ephesians 2:8-10  "For by grace you have been saved through faith; and that not of yourselves, it is the gift of God; not as a result of works, that no one should boast.  For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them."

Taking Traditions to a New Level!

Rodeo means good eatin' around the campus as the Senior Boys BBQ is always at the same time! This year the event was even better since the boys could cook, hang out, and serve in the new Student Life Center!!

Yes, it was cold last Thursday and Friday, but that does not stop our senior boys from cooking all night long to bring our students succulent brisket and grilled chicken!

It's a rite of passage to serve this meal and one that every senior class looks forward to!!  With the amazing new facilities, it was a snap this year!
Friday morning, senior girls came in to add potato salad, beans, and desserts...YUM!!

Thanks to all who worked so hard...it was delish!

From Kinder to Teacher: Building Legacies

When Sara Oppelt painted this mural on the wall of the SACS High School art room as a senior in 2004 she never imagined she would one day return as the teacher in the room.
But, she did and this smile has been a staple at our school since Sara first attended in kindergarten at the original campus on Blanco.
She would leave here as a athletic superstar and return as an established artist with a Bachelors of Art from The University of Texas in Austin and a Masters in Art Therapy from George Washington University in Washington D.C.
Sara says, " Returning to teach at SACS is the Lord's blessing."  She believes though new changes have happened, the heart of the school is the same. She is humbled an honored to be the teacher behind Gail Smith, a SACS favorite for twenty years, who moved to Dallas last summer.

Sara joins Mike DeFrees (MS) and Patti Grossman (ES) who have also returned after beginning their education here.  Just one of the many reasons, this is a special place where legacies begin!
